The Case for Mileage Running

Hello from the Centurion Lounge at San Francisco International Airport, which has been my temporary home for three of the past four Tuesday nights before a series of mileage runs to Dallas!

Yep, you read that correctly (although despite the fancy shoes, mileage running has nothing to do with actual running).

I write a lot about how I approach travel hacking, which is largely based on evaluating the (opportunity) costs of taking advantage of a particular hack and comparing it to the rewards I reap from it. So it may come as a surprise to hear that I have (not once, not twice, but thrice) opted to pay money to take an overnight flight to Dallas only to turn right around once I get there and arrive in San Francisco before it’s time to head into work. Step by Step Guide to Removing AU Cards from your Credit Reports

With the announcement of Chase extending their infamous “5/24 rule” to extend to all co-branded and business cards, there has been a lot of discussion about what to do in the interim before the rule takes effect and what to do after the hammer falls. For those who are unfamiliar, the 5/24 rule is that Chase will not approve you for a card if your credit report shows more than five new accounts in the last two years. This was designed to weed out applicants who ‘churn’ their cards for the signup bonuses without adding meaningful value to Chase as customers. Continue reading →

Did You Know? You Can Have Authorized User Cards Removed from Your Credit Report

I know better than to mess with the Devil(‘s Advocate), so I figured out a different tagline for this post than my previous one. Still pretty reminiscent, but it gets the point across…

Anyway, I tried a couple of experiments with authorized user cards in order to see if I could stretch out my paltry, 1 year 3 month average age of accounts. In particular, one experiment I tried was seeing if I could force Amex to backdate my Member Since date (not the account opening date, which was discontinued) by adding myself as an authorized user on my parents’ account and then somehow parlaying that into backdating on my cards that were opened before the rule change (hint: this failed miserably). Amex Gave Us a Red Card and Served a Blue Bird on a Platter

One day, when class participation was particularly poor in my eighth grade U.S. history class, my teacher told us that “Opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone has one.”

Nowhere is this more true than in the blogosphere, where my teacher’s claim might better be stated as, “Opinions are like belly buttons. Everyone must have one.” That being the case, here’s mine: Continue reading →

80,000 offer for the Hilton HHonors Surpass!

It looks like Amex has increased the offer on the Hilton HHonors Surpass to 80,000 points after $3000 minimum spend. The annual fee of $75 is NOT waived. This offer has been higher at 85,000 points, but difference is fairly minimal, so if you’re in need of Hilton points, it’s worth jumping on this now.

Although HHonors points have been majorly devalued in the last couple years, there are some great opportunities to be had when redeeming for Category 1/2 hotels. Check out this post by Travel is Free for some ideas. Continue reading →

$300 bonus for Amex Blue Cash Everyday!!

Via my mother (I have trained her well 😛 ), Costco Amex holders may be eligible for a $300 sign up bonus on the Amex Blue Cash Everyday (see Doctor of Credit’s review of it and a publicly accessible $250 offer here) card. As far as I know, there’s no offer code, but you do have to call in and go through the phone bill-pay flow (you will get redirected to an agent because they are trying to convert customers; note also that they may give you a lesser offer but as with all things, just HUCA). I tried numerous times to see if there were product change offers available over online chat and the reps came up with nothing, but if anyone has success, let us know in the comments.
