2016 Status Roundup: What I’ve Earned, and What I’ve Learned
At the beginning of the year, I did a reflection on 2015 and made some projections about what statuses I had earned, whether they’d be useful, and if I’d aim to re-qualify for them by the end of the year:
Elite Status Roundup: What Iāve earned, and what Iāve learned
Which of my predictions reached fruition?
I certainly reaped the benefits of Alaska status, whether they be the extra ~50,000 redeemable miles I earned, the Premium Economy seats on my upcoming AA flight to Madrid or the occasional exit row seat on Delta that isn’t considered part of its Economy Comfort offering. I also got upgraded a few times on Alaska metal itself, which, while nice, was nothing mind blowing. I still consider it an auxiliary benefit more than anything, although it might be more valuable now that Virgin America’s SFO-JFK route will be owned by Alaska. We’ll see when the upgrade policies coallesce.
Alaska is already matching Virgin America status
As you all know, the Alaska Airlines / Virgin America merger was finally approved recently. Alaska is taking more steps to merge the two airlines, and part of that process is a merger of the two frequent flier programs.
Many people got the following email stating that their Virgin America Elevate accounts and Mileage Plan accounts would be merged on January 9.
Dear Michael,
We have some exciting news about Virgin America’s integration with Alaska Airlines. Starting today, Elevate members can now earn points when flying on Alaska Airlines.
FoundersCard Membership Signup Bonus of $100 Amex Gift Card –> How I’m Paying $235 for 2 Years
UPDATE: if you used ourĀ referral links, could you please let us know? Apparently the referrals are not gettingĀ automatically tracked.
Hello everyone!
I’ve been getting bombarded for over a yearĀ by FoundersCard (referral link, see end of post for details)Ā to join their program at a lifetime rate of $295/year. That wasn’t very appealing to meĀ at the time, since I couldn’t justify how to get more than $295/year of value from the program. My friends Kenneth and Tonei were telling me about some of the great benefits. I’m going to rank them here as well as a few thoughts:
Match to Hilton Diamond from Hyatt or IHG Platinum
EDIT (4/20/2016):Ā Hilton hasĀ updated the link to the status match page, the old one no longer works! You can access the new page here
EDIT:Ā There seems to be more datapoints for successful matches from IHG Platinum vs. Hyatt Platinum. Please leave us your datapoints, either here or in the reddit thread!
Also, make sure you send in .JPG files for the match, otherwise Hilton will reject your request and you will have to followup to send it again, as the form won’t let you send another request.
How to successfully register for Atitalia MilleMiglia
EDIT: This method still isn’t working perfectly for people. I suggest trying the normal registration page, and then calling in to get your code if things are still failing. The US call center claimed that they can’t register new accounts over the phone.
As posted earlier, Atitalia is offering a status match to elite members of various other frequent flier programs.
Unfortunately, when I tried to register, I just repeatedly received a mysterious error “Error in Service.” There have been reports of the registration successfully completing even with this error, so check your email. I unfortunately did not get this email.
Quick news you can use: TopCashback bonus, Alitalia status match, Shyp + eBay and American award availability
TopCashback is offeringĀ bonus cashback on your next purchaseĀ by 2/5/2016, with minimum purchase of the bonus cashback amount. eBay is included. I’m personally going to buy some AirBnB gift cards through PayPal Digital Gifts as that’s a great way to get a discount on AirBnB stays.Ā This offer is targeted and may vary by person. I personally was offered $10 cashback.
Via The Points Guy, Alitalia is currently offering a status match fromĀ Oneworld, Star Alliance, and other carriers like Alaska through January 31, 2016. Just send an email to StatusMatchMilleMiglia@alitalia.comĀ with your full name, MilleMigliaĀ numberĀ and a copy of your frequent flyer card that you are matching from. Your new status will be active until March 31, 2016, unless your status was valid through then, then your status will be valid until March 31, 2017.Unfortunately, I seem to be unable to register a MilleMiglia account right now as their site is erroring out.
Elite Status Roundup: What Iāve earned, and what Iāve learned
As 2015 was my first full year of travel/travel hacking, it was also the first year in which I achieved status with airline and hotel loyalty programs. In the spirit of being analytical in my decision-making, I figured it would be worth doing an accounting of the statuses I attained and the benefits that they ended up offering me in practice (I only have about three months of data since I qualified for most of these in October or November). So, without further ado:
Hilton HHonors status match and MLife status match from Hyatt
Via an official HHonors representative onĀ FlyerTalk, Hilton HHonors has a status match program.Ā Email a request toĀ HHonorMyStatus@hilton.comĀ with your HHonors and something showing your elite status in another program, and see what happens! Send your request byĀ January 11, 2016Ā and you’ll have the matchedĀ status through March 2017.
Since you can automatically get either HHonors Silver from credit cards like theĀ Hilton HHonors American Express or theĀ Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature, or HHonors Gold from credit cards like theĀ Hilton HHonors Surpass American Express or Citi Hilton Reserve card, I would say it’s only worth it to match to Diamond or possibly Gold if you have neither credit card.
