Just a quick collection of posts I saw that were interesting, as well as a short experience with the Hilton Best Rate guarantee.

Via Doctor of Credit, there’s a great Amex Offer currently running right now, where you can get $50 of $100 at AirBnB, including gift cards. Please read the follow-up post with all the details you need to know about the deal! If you are are buying gift cards, here are the key things you need to know: Continue reading →

A theoretical travel hacker walks into a bar….

A theoretical physicist walks into a bar….

Oh wait, that’s not right. In theoretical physics, everything happens inside a perfect vacuum.

No, I don’t expect you to have taken college physics (or even high school physics, for that matter) to get something out of this post. All you need to know is this: in physics, a perfect vacuum is a space that doesn’t have any external forces or influences so that when you do some sort of calculation (say, how far a meteor will travel in a given amount of time), you don’t have to take into account things like friction, gravity, or air resistance. That is to say, you can calculate without making any other considerations. Continue reading →

Easy 200 Starpoints and 500 IHG points!

Via The Points Guy, you can earn 200 Starpoints just for opting in to e-statements. Just click this link and log in. If you don’t see the offer, try unsubscribing from e-statements and checking again.

Via Mommy Points, you can earn 500 IHG points just for changing your default payment method to a MasterCard credit credit. I received an email titled “Faster bookings & 500 points when you load your MasterCard” but it doesn’t seem to be a targeted promotion, so it’s worth a try even if you didn’t get an email. Roomer has it: Orbitz + Masterpass + Roomer = Free Money

Update (9/18 4:30AM): Well, that was fun while it lasted. The promo code has been maxed out and is no longer valid.

When I first saw the $50 off $100 stay by using code MASTERPASS on Orbitz, I was really excited. I mean, I even went so far as to apply for the Orbitz Rewards Visa Card because it provides me significant value.

But then I saw the terms (bolding mine):

Offer is valid for a limited time only and is only available when displayed on www.orbitz.com. Available on desktop and mobile web where MasterPass is an available payment option.  Book a qualifying standalone, pre-paid hotel stay (total cost $100 or more) with travel occurring between September 18, 2015 and September 30, 2015  via Orbitz using MasterPass as the payment method and promo code MASTERPASS, and receive $100 off your booking.  Most major chains are excluded; to find participating hotels look for the “PROMO CODE ELIGIBLE” message on Orbitz.com hotel listings… Continue reading →

Intriguing Marriott Premier offer

Update (9/19): Reddit is reporting three versions of the offer (targeted) depending on your Marriott status.

I was poking around last night at some Marriott hotels for a January trip to New Orleans (specifically, for a hotel I could BRG), and I stumbled upon the following Marriott Premier credit card offer during the booking flow:

Reward yourself with a $150 statement credit

  • $150 statement credit after your first purchase,* including a Marriott®reservation or anything else. It will appear on your statement within 6-8 weeks. Price for stay and statement credit may post on separate statements.
  • Plus 40,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000 on purchases in your first 3 months.*

Although you could go through the flow and collect the link yourself, it doesn’t seem to be unique so you can access the offer directly here. Continue reading →

Consider the Lobster: Huge value from Orbitz Rewards Dining on your first dine

Just to get it out of the way: I promise that I’m not in any way compensated by Orbitz. I just think their program offers huge value and is a fairly easy entry into travel hacking. In about 10 months, I’ve managed to rack up about $1,000 in Orbucks (their rewards currency) as well as their Platinum status, which actually provides tangible benefits in two checked bag reimbursements (well, back in Orbucks) as well as a TSA Precheck voucher code. It only requires 12 nights (not stays!), and Orbucks-paid stays count towards that requirement, so it’s fairly easy to reach. Continue reading →

How to get an Orbitz coupon valid for all of 2016!

In case you guys didn’t know, I’m a huge fan of Orbitz and their rewards program. However, I’ve been a bit bummed of late because I have a few trips lined up for next year but am unable to book hotels (i.e. use my supply of Orbucks) because Orbitz hadn’t released any promotional codes valid for 2016 stays.

Thankfully, that changed last weekend with the release of code:

Taking Advantage of Hotel Chain Best Rate Guarantees

I recently had 3 very favorable experiences with hotel chain best rate guarantees, 2 with Marriott as well as 1 with Starwood Hotels. I managed to save over 30% compared to the rate offered by the hotel this way while still earning hotel points and being able to use elite status benefits.

I wanted to share my experiences so people can take advantage themselves. The process is not always simple, but with perseverance and attention to detail, you should be successful. Some 3rd party hotel booking websites also have best rate guarantee programs, such as Orbitz, but that will be a topic of a different post.
